Back to Basics

Students: Martino Bilello, Saurabh Datta  ·  Year: 2014  ·  Course: Experimental Imaging

The beginning of the course was about understanding what the principles of photography are and what can be achieved when a photo camera is used in manual mode.  Using a camera in as may ways as possible to see what the results would be was one way to better understand how it works. Our goal was also to try to use techniques and methods introduced during the class and, at the same time, being inspired by the works of great artists and professionals.

High speed photography was one of the techniques we experimented with. A very high shutter speed allowed us to capture the splash of water caused by a ping pong ball thrown into a bowl. We also discovered that with a low shutter speed and a LED it’s possible to practice Light Painting photography. During our exploration we attached a light to a toothbrush and to a broom in order to depict the motion of a person who is brushing his teeth and of someone who is sweeping the pavement.

Another technique we adopted was Stop Motion. We gave life to inanimate objects and animated an egg that manages to open the carton he is in and escape.
