Beaming it Right

Students: Samer Nakfour, Paula Te  ·  Year: 2014  ·  Course: Experimental Imaging

In half a day, we experimented with projecting light through different materials and on different surfaces. Through these experiments, we explored the patterns, textures, and qualities of refracted light.

For the first set of images, we took generative designs and movie scenes and projected them through water and glass. The result ranges from an aurora-like hazy cloud to slices of green light cutting through a scene in Casablanca.

In the second set of images, we projected samples of animated text on an angled surface and took close-up shots of the projections. The angle of the surfaces splits the piece into two, with contrasting speed, color, and texture on either side.

We presented this work along with “Finger Follows Function” at the end of the class. We found this process of experimenting with photography extremely enjoyable; “let’s just try it” became our catchphrase for the week.
