Cultívate
An on-farm soil analyzer that gives farmers peace of mind for sustainable farming practices best fit for their land.
Some of the most important issues in the world, like food security, climate action and nutrition, all connect to food and the agricultural system in one way or another. In Costa Rica, agriculture is an important part of the economy and to the future of farming. One incredibly important component of growing crops, that is often taken for granted and abused, is the health of soil. Many farmers acknowledge that their soil is ‘tired’ but are often at ends for how to improve it.
While small farmers in Costa Rica have a deep connection to their land and what they grow, they sometimes lack the knowledge and resources to grow food that is in harmony with nature.
Cultívate was created for small farmers who are hesitant to adopt regenerative practices but willing to learn and take proactive steps to better their land. More specifically, Cultívate uses an app and auger to help farmers re-think how they are using their land and improve their soil.
There are two main components: The Cultívate app and smart barreno (auger) work together through bluetooth connection to receive instant information and regenerative suggestions about the land they want to grow on. Cultívate considers the cultural context of farming by making sure sensors are combined into a simple and practical tool with the aid of embedded sensors to easily dissect scientific information.
This service provides the necessary support small farmers need to adapt their growing decisions to produce positive ecological, financial, and social outcomes. The intent is to give farmers the power and on-the-ground knowledge of their own land towards local and regional food economies that improve soils, biodiversity and farmer livelihoods.
