Designing Editorial Products
Enrol here!
Workshop Dates: August 3-7, 2020
Faculty: Elena Gianni & Jennifer Kay
What is this workshop?
By drawing from our experience working at The New York Times we’ll cover the basics of a different approach to design and innovation. We believe that innovation doesn’t always need to involve the latest technology but can stem also from telling stories in new ways. Stories and information are a crucial but overlooked part of our experience online and offline. This course will teach you how to use information as another one of your design materials.
What will you learn?
Content is everywhere, in almost any of the interfaces we design. You’ll learn how to integrate content design in every step of the design process: from strategy, to ideation, to prototyping, to design and shipping polished interfaces.
You’ll learn the basics of editorial thinking and format development from both a design and an editorial point of view.
We’ll cover concept development for editorial products, research & rapid prototyping through writing, how to merge editorial and product strategy and finally the basics of typography and layout so that you can design your own solution!
What you will not learn?
While we are focusing on editorial design, this will not be an introduction to journalism. It also won't touch on data visualization or coding
How will you learn it?
We’ll have a hands on approach that merges writing and design exercises to deliver on our brief. You’ll go through a quick, iterative design process, in teams that will super-charge your learnings while having tons of fun.
Is this for you?
Yes, if you are interested in understanding how to use content as a design material. If you are a designer, but would like to learn how to work with words, stories and information architecture. If you love magazines, books, or newspapers and design and you are looking for a practice that merges the two.
