Distance vs Engagement
We were asked to use visual design as a method to find meaningful patterns in a data set. I chose to investigate the channels I use to communicate with my family and the relative engagement I have when talking to them.
I found a clear split between the data before and after joining CIID. In the former, there was a lot of face-to-face and phone conversations, but little relative engagement. However, after leaving my home country, my family communication started happening exclusively on Skype with a very high engagement level. This pattern is noteworthy given that we tend to classify digital communication as second-class, discounting it as not being "the real thing".
