Learning the tools and methods of animation to produce sequences of images was the goal in the final brief of this course. After using various photographic techniques at the beginning of the class, searching for inspiration in materials and experimenting with the medium of image sequences was our final 2-day assignment.

One of the techniques shown during the class that we wanted to use and learn was the effect of “Drift”. When similar images are put in a sequence as key frames of an animation, software can be used to merge them together but in doing so the algorithm fills the gap between all the images giving a morphing effect.

We tried out the same technique with different subjects, “Garden drift” and “Drifting faces” are some of our findings. We then kept playing with movement, timing, objects, lighting and iterated several times. Light painting was one of the techniques that intrigued us the most. By shooting the movement of a brush with 4 desk lamps attached and increasing the shutter speed on every picture taken we could create “Rising of the Phoenix”. A sequence of different landscapes with in common the same D shaped foam piece was another of our explorations.
