In this one-day project, we explored the personality of everyday objects and expressed them through short stop-motion video clips.

Death and Rebirth of an Egg
In our previous imaging experiments, we utilized high-speed cameras to capture the effect of the smashing gesture on tomatoes. Inspired by these experiments, we continued our exploration with eggs. By focusing on its oblong shape, rolling and wriggling motions, and the sounds created from its shell, we identified potential personality elements.

The first part of the video showcases a frightened egg evading the inevitable death sentence on a chopping board. Increasing extent of movements, shaky footage and timing manipulation were used to create impact on the narrative. Inspired by the cracks on boiled eggs and the notion of a shell, the second part expresses the idea of rebirth through piecing the shell together. Egg shells were filmed being removed from a boiled egg and placed on the surface one piece at a time. Thereafter, footage was reversed to complete the rebirth process.

Jumping Squares
Intrigued by the capture of colourful lights using long exposure, we experimented with light painting using the iPhone. Three images of coloured rectangles were projected from the phone in a dark room. Varied movements were explored to examine its visual effects. Finally, a sequence featuring rectangles that appear to playfully leap was created.
