FreeStyle
FreeStyle is designed to help self-taught athletes develop good muscle memory and technique for ice skating, specifically figure skating. Figure skating is a sport that involves precise movement and necessitates observation and correction of an experienced coach. This poses barriers to entry for those who cannot afford the tutelage; less experienced coaches may not precisely correct the movements of a novice creating barriers to progress.
FreeStyle uses motion capture technology to sense where the body is in space and gives real-time feedback on body positioning using haptics, emulating the environment where the user is practicing with someone. It uses projection mapping built into the skates and/or mounted on the rinkside to give the user a path to follow when learning different elements of skating. FreeStyle pairs movement with audio prompts from an Artificial Intelligence (AI) coach using bluetooth earmuffs. The AI coach talks the user through the points in a move and offers words of encouragement.
Interview with an ex-figure skater and professional coach confirmed the desirability of the concept, feedback from experienced connected devices subject matter experts confirmed the technological feasibility. As a next step the design team would seek to confirm market viability.
