What is this workshop?

We live in a time in which digital technology is starting to break out of the paradigm of screens and keyboards into spatial, tactile, and multi-sensory experiences. In this four-day workshop, we will introduce you to a set of tools that allows you to design and prototype immersive experiences.

What will you learn?

  • Introduction to a basic process for creating an experience through brainstorming, bodystorming, storyboarding, prototyping and testing.

  • Introduction to a diverse prototyping toolkit for immersive experiences and understanding of when to use which technique

  • Hands-on experience with analog prototyping tools, including drawing, cardboard modeling, tape mockups, etc.

  • Hands-on experience with digital fabrication techniques

  • Hands-on experience with digital tools, including creative coding platform Processing, Projection Mapping, and Tramontana.

  • Design principles and concepts unique to creating interactions in three-dimensional spaces that engage varying numbers of users simultaneously

In this course, we will explore how to craft meaningfully connected spaces through practical, hands-on prototyping and scenario building. We will introduce and explore concepts from the design of internet-connected objects to the worlds of virtual and mixed reality. An emphasis will be placed on rapid prototyping and exploring these designs. Together we will explore a number of quick exercises to better understand these technologies.

With the learned knowledge of prototyping techniques, affordances, physical materials, and digital tools, participants will build a working physical prototype to communicate their final idea. You will learn how to use immersive storytelling rather than screen-based presentations to demonstrate the experiences.

Is this for you?

This course takes a broad definition of immersive experiences. If you are interested in our spaces becoming both digital and physical in the future and how we might approach design for this condition, then you are a good candidate for this course. This will be a hands-on course, and we will build prototypes of spaces.

What do you need to bring to the workshop?

  • A computer

  • Beginners Mindset
