Kintsugi
An interactive kit to heal a broken heart
"Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise".
This project started as an exploration of love, which found its way into the psychological consequences of being heartbroken.
During the research process, it was clear that people don’t seek professional help to heal this impactful emotional wound that reduces self-love and in some cases, there are hearts that never heal.
Using the four steps of healing an emotional wound, ‘Kintsugi’ supports people that have experienced heartbreak, to face their feelings so that they can positively learn from it and move on.
People are guided through a self-healing process with 4 different sets of cards with interactive psychological exercises to express, release and let go. Each of these decks contains a “broken piece” of the totem, which visualizes progress.
As per Japanese philosophy, ‘Kintsugi’ helps people understand that healing a broken heart is a beautiful emotional scar that everyone should share and embrace.
