Life-Centered Design
Did you know that design is one of the main enablers for improvement when we want to improve or apply a circular economy? 60% of a sustainable solution is achieved during the design phase.
Workshop Dates: October 24-28, 2022

We have created an intensive five-day workshop to discover and practice the Life-Centered Design approach and tools to design new Sustainable business models, products, and services integrating the triple bottom line People, Planet, prosperity.
This hands-on course will guide you through the entire process, from understanding an ecosystem of stakeholders and actors to discovering their un-covered needs and dependencies to create a sustainable solution – whether it is a process, a service, a product, or a business model.
You will learn how to combine System Thinking, Circular Design, and FutureCasting tools to create Sustainable innovation.
During the week, you will do research, create insights, prototype, and test new sustainable solutions. Along the way, you’ll learn how to think systematically and use new tools to take back to your work. These tools will help you to:
- Map an eco-system
- Plan & Run an inclusive research
- Identify causalities & Consequences
- Develop sustainable ideas
- Evaluate the environmental and social dimensions of your ideas based on previously identified SDGs (The Sustainable Development Goals)
- Define probable and desirable future scenarios based on insights and trends.
By the end of day five, you will be ready to apply this knowledge to your own work and become an ambassador of Life-Centered Design inside your organization.
Lectures are spread throughout the five days and are immediately followed by direct hands-on applications, research and prototyping, and individual and group coaching along the way.
What will you learn?
We will introduce you to a fast, effective, and broadly applicable design toolkit for researching strategic innovation opportunities and prototyping service concepts. Our focus is on nuanced applications specific to CIID’s design practice with an emphasis on tools and techniques for Sustainable innovation, all applied through learning by doing.
How will you learn it?
The five days of teaching are structured around three main phases of the Life-Centered Design process: Inspiration – Ideation – Implementation. We will start with an introduction to Sustainability, main definitions, and principles.
Inspiration
- Ecosystem & boundary map: how to identify the actors and their dependencies
- Inclusion & diversity sampling: how to create a relevant sampling based on time & budget constraints
- Field Research methods
- Actor card: how to describe the different actors, their needs, and expectations
- Shared needs mapping: Identifying shared needs between actors and developing trade-offs.
- Trends and signal hunting
Ideation
- Probable and Desirable scenarios
- Opportunity finding: How to formulate questions from research-backed insights.
- Rapid ideation: Tools for generating large quantities of ideas based on biomimicry, role model or inspiring companies.
- Refining ideas: tools to refine ideas to use fewer resources and have a positive impact
- Prioritize ideas based on the people, planet, and prosperity model.
Implementation
- Concept mapping: Tools for developing rough ideas into a detailed and actionable concept for sustainable innovation.
- Co-creation: A powerful way to get input and buy-in from end users by involving them in the design process directly.
- Experience Prototyping and rapid field testing.
