Lucid dreams are when you know that you’re dreaming while you’re asleep. Sometimes, you can control the lucid dream. You may be able to change the people, environment, situation, or storyline. Some research has pointed to the potential benefits of lucid dreaming, such as treatment for nightmares, overcoming fear and anxiety, training motor skills, or to improve creativity.

Small studies have found that with certain practices or methods, you may be able to raise your chances of dreaming lucidly. And that’s where the inspiration for this project came from.

Lucid Dreaming Bootcamp is an interactive iPad app that introduces different techniques to help people to achieve lucid dreaming.

The app introduces/facilitates 6 different techniques:

  • Dream Journaling, where you can keep a record of your dream and the method you try every night.

  • Mnemonic Induction, where you exercise self-brainwash reading repetition every night before sleeping.

  • Re-arrange text, a form of a reality check to find out whether you are in a dream or reality.

  • Mirror check, another form of reality checking that uses the device's front-camera to check whether anything is wrong with your reflection.

  • Custom Alarm, to enable “Waking Back To Bed” technique.

  • And Fingers Drill, to train your fingers motor skill that helps you to be in a half-awake and half-asleep state.

The app was developed during the GUI (Graphic User Interface) course using Figma and Origami Studio. The focus of the learning was to explore the full workflow of prototyping an interactive mobile application, starting from conceptualization, wireframing in Figma, and crafting high fidelity micro-interaction in Origami Studio.

Lucid Dreaming Bootcamp is designed for people that curious about controlling their dream, either for health benefit, overcoming anxiety, study, or even just for fun. While the techniques being introduced in the app are based on some studies and articles found on the internet, they are not fully scientifically proven and don’t guarantee any positive results. For serious applications, further studies are required.
