Mixed Reality Experiences
Mixed Reality (MR) is a new medium that challenges our assumptions of existing design paradigms. This workshop delves into design theory, prototyping techniques, and practical hands-on experience to help you explore Mixed Reality’s potential.
Workshop Dates: July 29-August 2, 2019
Faculty: Daniel Plemmons & Daniel Rosas

What is this workshop?
Blending the real and virtual worlds raises new and exciting design questions. What does a photo gallery look like when it can fill your entire room? How do you navigate a spatially aware file browser? What does it mean to walk behind your User Interfaces? These are all challenges that MR designers address every day. This workshop will familiarize you with existing MR technologies and explore different tools and techniques for designing experiences that span the digital and physical world.
What will you learn?
- An understanding of modern MR devices and the strengths and weaknesses of each platform.
- A mental model for approaching MR design challenges.
- Lo-fi to hi-fi techniques for prototyping, assessing, and presenting Mixed Reality designs.
- No-code and low-code approaches for getting designs into Unity 3D and onto Mixed Reality devices.
How will you learn it?
Each day students will participate in discussions and activities that explore new tools or techniques for ideating, prototyping and iterating on Mixed Reality experiences. Students will start by using physical objects to create analogue prototypes and will eventually move to digital prototyping techniques that can be experienced in Mixed Reality devices.
Is this for you?
This workshop is for anyone who is passionate about learning to craft experiences in Mixed Reality, including everything from Augmented Reality to Virtual Reality. The workshop is designed to be as inclusive as possible to different skill sets and backgrounds.
We’ll work hard to make the workshop accessible, but mobility and use of at least one hand will be important to interact with the various devices, tools, and experiences.
What you need to bring to this workshop:
- Laptop installed with Unity 2018.x Personal Edition (Free)
Enrol now: There is a maximum number of 20 places available for each workshop, first come first served. Enrolment will be closed when the workshops are full.
