For Materials of Electronics, we were asked to celebrate any inanimate object. The possibilities were virtually endless. We both share a love for beer. The answer came to us pretty quickly. What happened after took longer. While beer itself is used as a symbol of celebration, we found it tricky to celebrate beer itself. What could we do more?

We looked to the past. During our research, we found a Sumerian poem dedicated to Ninkasi, goddess of beer and alcohol, “born of sparkling water”. The poem is recited from the old generation to the new. The poem also doubles as a recipe for beer. We had an inspiration. The task was to use the inspiration to add magic to the joy of opening up a beer using electronics.

We came up with the idea of infusing a beer box with the poem. A moment of reflection built into the moment before you open up the box for celebration. We used copper tapes, and custom switches that each activate with the “windows” of the box, and a pressure sensitive base, to build a beer box that holds upto 4 standard beer cans.

Every time you open up our box, you offer a prayer to Ninkasi.
