Patterns of Conversations

Student: Myoungeun Kim  ·  Year: 2014  ·  Course: Information Design

This project was inspired by observing a chat application on my phone - and looking for the different usage patterns depending on who I talk with. By simplifying speech balloons without text, I found meaningful patterns of each conversation.

As the conversation goes in a more casual way, fewer words are used and more icons/images appear. In contrast, if the conversation is more formal, the text becomes more descriptive. In casual chats, the length of words decreases, however, the frequency of conversations is increased. Patterns of emoticons and icons are another distinguished visual factor to represent each type of conversation.

Even though its visual language is based on the original application design, I tried to redesign and simplify it to focus on the visual patterns of conversation, so people can read overall graphics at a glance .
