Walkability is one of the most important factors to urban well-being. That said, not every city is designed for walking. For instance, in San Jose, Costa Rica walking isn't always an enjoyable experience.
For a younger and tech savvy population in San Jose, the city isn't seen as a place for people to explore, rest, or spend time downtown. Oftentimes people take the same routes into and out of the city and limit the amount of time in the area. However, many people wish they could know more about the area from people who know more about places to visit, rest, or explore.
Scout is a crowdsourced platform based around an app and a Mupi to help encourage people to walk and explore downtown San Jose, Costa Rica. The product allows people to contribute by adding places and routes to the platform, explore through maps and interactions on the Mupi, and interact in new ways with foot UI downtown.
This project aims to use interaction design as a stepping stone to helping bring attention to and change the way cities design their spaces. It also has broader implications and learnings for urban infrastructure and the power of crowdsourced data to empower change.
