Skype (or Facebook?)

Facebook or Skype or Whatsapp or text message or email or FaceTime? The plethora of communication channels I use makes it at times hard, and other times easy to decide which channel to use.

A study of my communication channels and the relationships built on them uncovered patterns of use. Although messages are typically exchanged on multiple channels between myself and persons close to me, there were marked attempts to drive conversations towards specific digital spaces. The key insight was my attempts to isolate the intimate circle and intimate conversations in specific apps.

I chose to juxtapose Skype with Facebook as they are at two ends of my intimacy spectrum. The former is a conglomeration of almost all my contacts - distant and close. Whereas the latter houses only my inner circle - persons I don't shy away from face-to-face contact.

Over the course of this three-day project, I explored means to convey this message. The outcome is an information graphic that utilises the eye scanning gesture on a computer screen, emotionally tinted images and dramatic trivialisation to highlight the relative importance of conversations forged across these two mediums.

A key learning was in the experimentation of different image editing techniques to emphasise and de-emphasise aspects of the information graphic. The process of enhancing clarity of the message also allowed me to gain a better grasp of the meaning embedded in various gestures, metaphors, symbols, colours and shapes. Finally, this exercise helped augment my sensitivity towards visual noise and improve my capability to communicate in a visually concise fashion.
