Tax Free Period
In the Graphical User Interface course, students were asked to tell a story about something that they were passionate about and make use of interactivity and animation to engage a user with the subject matter more deeply.
Having a personal interest in access to sex education and health, the goal of this project was to create awareness and action around unfair realities that Latin American women live on a daily basis. After doing research on different problems and initiatives taken around the world, I decided to work around tax free periods.
Period products’ taxes only apply to people who menstruate, it’s not just unfair, but also a form of sex-based discrimination. In developing countries, many women cannot afford to buy pads or tampons and put their health at risk. Period products are essentials that should be available for all who need them and, at a minimum, sales tax-free.
Inspired by the US tax free periods campaigns and change.org’s pledge signing system, I focused this project on increasing engagement and empathy before any action is taken. Some interactions include profile creation, comparative animation between the user and a same age woman in a Latin American country, donation and pledge signing.
