The Sounds Kitchen
Music and background sounds can have a profound effect on both the emotions and the body. By listening to music one can focus, relax or just enjoy oneself. Some find the sounds of cooking, the various ingredients or processes happening in the kitchen, to be quite relaxing– this is where the concept for The Sounds Kitchen originated.
The project is the result of a one-week introduction to programming, aimed at learning the basics of data and object-oriented coding using the p5.js library.
Once in the kitchen, twelve different types of food are shown. Hovering the mouse on each one of them will trigger the reproduction of specific sounds they are linked to. Passing from one dish to the other sounds will start playing loops and adding to the existing soundscape.
According to the position of the mouse, the sounds of dishes that are further away will have a lower intensity than the one closer to the cursor, providing a varied soundscape when the mouse is moving, even when all the sounds are playing at the same time. The aim of this project is to reproduce the relaxing sounds typical of a kitchen. However, it is possible to isolate each sound by simply clicking on the food.
