Urban Aquarium
Urban Aquarium explores different ways the Barrio Escalante community in San Jose could activate their 'local' economy when the pandemic ceases. The area of focus was outdoor entertainment to draw customers into restaurants, since it was speculated that people may still be apprehensive to be in larger numbers in closed spaces. Urban Aquarium uses projection mapping to project fish and other aquatic animals onto surfaces that people can use their shadows to interact with. Inspiration for the project to be something people can play with was gained after observing a mother and child painting a hopscotch game on a sidewalk.
A stakeholder map was drawn to see who would benefit from this as well as interviews with a few locals. The interviews provided the key insights that helped guide the project to be aimed at families rather than young adults. The aquatic life motif was chosen to help connect a part of San Jose, a city in the middle of Costa Rica, with the oceans that flank the country. A few video prototypes of Urban Aquarium were made to test how the interactions would play out and if they would feel natural. If the project was to be continued, local Costa Rican artists and animators would be commissioned to work on some of the assets of Urban Aquarium.
